Schubert
Winterreise
arranged for cello and piano by Robert Cohen
(UK premiere performance)
Dina Duisen with Robert Cohen
Schubert ’s Winterreise for voice and piano is a monument of Western culture.
The journey is one that all can relate to; unrequited love, despair and turmoil, then doubt and self-searching that comes with abandoning love and hope.
The cycle of songs forms a journey. It moves from the immediate reaction to lost love and despair to one that explores the psychology of the protagonist in relation to the nature around him and that of mankind itself.
Possibly no other music has ever touched the human soul to the extent of Winterreise.
It may represent the pinnacle of the art of song writing but its universality and understanding of the human soul makes it accessible to all.
Traditionally sung in German, Robert’s arrangement for cello and piano transforms the genre into the form of Song without Words, translating the sound of the language into poetic nuances, articulations, colours and emotions that speaks the text through his cello.
